US aware ‘Nigerian’ prepared for terror attack
The US was aware that “a Nigerian” in Yemen was being prepared for a terrorist attack – weeks before an attempted bombing on a US plane. ABC News and the New York Times say there was intelligence to this effect, but its source is unclear. Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab flew from Lagos to Amsterdam before changing planes for a flight to Detroit on which he allegedly tried to detonate a bomb. Awlaki personally blessed Detroit attack
The Nigerian accused of trying to blow up a Detroit-bound airliner had his suicide mission personally blessed in Yemen by Anwar al-Awlaki, the same Muslim imam suspected of radicalizing the Fort Hood shooting suspect, a U.S. intelligence source has told The Washington Times. The intelligence official, who is familiar with the FBI’s interrogation of Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, said the bombing suspect has boasted of his jihad training during interrogation by the FBI and has said it included final exhortations by Mr. al-Awlaki. “It was Awlaki who indoctrinated him,” the official said. “He was told, ‘You are going to be the tip of the spear of the Muslim nation.'” [Perhaps it’ time to drop the political correctness and understand Islam is at war with this country and “the muslim nation” will stop at nothing in “its” quest to kill thousands more innocent Americans…ed]
Somali Man Arrested at Mogadishu Airport With Chemicals, Syringe Last Month
A man tried to board a commercial airliner in Mogadishu last month carrying powdered chemicals, liquid and a syringe that could have caused an explosion in a case bearing chilling similarities to the terrorist plot to blow up a Detroit-bound airliner, officials told The Associated Press on Wednesday. The Somali man — whose name has not yet been released — was arrested by African Union peacekeeping troops before the Nov. 13 Daallo Airlines flight took off. It had been scheduled to travel from Mogadishu to the northern Somali city of Hargeisa, then to Djibouti and Dubai. A Somali police spokesman, Abdulahi Hassan Barise, said the suspect is in Somali custody. [They fly commercial airliners in Somalia? Who knew? While a terrorist was plotting to kill Americans over the Christmas holidays, what was the Federal Aviation Administration doing? Why, spending $5 million on a three-week-long Christmas party, of course. A series of seminars in Atlanta officially were aimed at training managers on a new air-traffic-controller contract but degenerated into one big bash. According to ABC News, the seminars didn’t even cover half of the 100 new provisions in a contract that went into effect two months ago. Participants apparently also were too busy partying on the taxpayer dime to learn much. Whistleblowers told ABC tales of rampant drunken debauchery, including one attendee propositioning an undercover reporter for her services as a prostitute. He has delivered two hasty, tie-less statements on homeland security from a makeshift podium in Honolulu whose underwhelming sum impact has been the equivalent of voting “present” (Obama’s career m.o.) By his own admission and in direct contradiction to his hapless DHS Secretary, the president acknowledged yesterday that “systemic failure” led to the breach. Obama is not scheduled to return to Washington until Sunday. That’s four more full days of reinforcing his image as detached, aloof, and too damned tired to tackle the jihadi epidemic with the once-hyped energy and passion of a 48-year-old Super-Agent of Hope and Change. Russia needs more weapons to punch through America’s new missile defence shield, Vladimir Putin said yesterday in blunt remarks that will complicate efforts to cut the nuclear arsenals of the former Cold War rivals. The Russian Prime Minister, reasserting himself as the country’s real ruler, said that Moscow should press ahead with a new generation of weapons to stop the Americans doing “whatever they want”. “To preserve the balance we must develop offensive weapons systems, not missile defence systems as the United States is doing,” he said during a visit to the naval port of Vladivostok on the Pacific coast. Obama orders creation of declassification center
President Obama created by executive order Tuesday a National Declassification Center to oversee efforts to make once-secret government documents public. The order comes as part of Obama’s promise to push government to err on the side of disclosure as it tackles the need to keep certain information from the public. In a post on the White House blog, William H. Leary, the senior director of records and access management at the National Security Council, writes that the effort is aimed at shifting the burden of defending secrecy to the government. “While the Government must be able to prevent the public disclosure of information that would compromise the national security, a democratic government accountable to the people must be as transparent as possible and must not withhold information for self-serving reasons or simply to avoid embarrassment,” Leary wrote. America still has a race problem, though not the one that conventional wisdom would suggest: the racism of whites toward blacks. Old fashioned white racism has lost its legitimacy in the world and become an almost universal disgrace. The essence of our new “post-modern” race problem can be seen in the parable of the emperor’s new clothes. French Constitutional Court Rejects Carbon Tax
France’s constitutional court rejected a proposed tax on carbon emissions, saying a web of exemptions violated the principal of equality and rendered efforts to cut greenhouse gas emissions ineffective. The government said it will make new proposals on Jan. 20. The tax, which would have started on Jan. 1, was set at 17 euros ($24.38) per ton of carbon-dioxide emissions, President Nicolas Sarkozy said in September. To make the tax more palatable, he partially or fully exempted power plants, public transport, airlines, farming and fishing, as well as 1,018 older cement, steel and glass factories. In all, 93 percent of all industrial carbon emissions in France would have avoided paying the full tax, the constitutional court said in a decision published on its Web site. The tax would have fallen disproportionately on fuel for heating and cars, it said. Believers would call it a Christmas miracle: A mother dies in labor on Christmas Eve. Her child is stillborn. Then, minutes later, both of them come miraculously back to life. All this happened last Thursday night in a Colorado hospital, according to the Associated Press. Tracy Hermanstorfer had stopped breathing during labor at Memorial Hospital in Colorado Springs. “She had no signs of life. US tree surfer crashes into car
Authorities say a man in Southern California riding a Christmas tree being dragged behind a sport utility vehicle slammed into a parked car and was hospitalised with head injuries. Orange County sheriff’s spokesman Jim Amormino says the 18-year-old and another teenager were Christmas tree “surfing”, a seasonal internet fad. Capt Greg McKeown says the SUV was going about 40km/h on Sunday night when the female driver took a corner and the tree veered wide and crashed. Amormino says the driver fled. A man who tried to sell an engagement ring through Craigslist ended up getting sprayed with Mace and robbed by his supposed buyer — a Mafia associate who helped pull off a daring armored-car heist in the ’80s, authorities said. Gerald DeGerolamo, 65, responded to the ad for an engagement ring posted by David Cushman and the two agreed to meet Dec. 26 in front of 125 Christopher St., law-enforcement sources said. Once Cushman took out the ring, DeGerolamo sprayed him in the face with Mace, grabbed the ring and ran. Pinellas deputies: driver so drunk she went to hospital, not jail
Pinellas sheriff’s deputies arrested a woman that they said was so drunk they had to send her to the hospital instead of jail. The incident took place on Nov. 23, but driver Candace Rhul Spathelf wasn’t arrested on a charge of felony driving under the influence until Tuesday. (SNIP) According to the Sheriff’s Office, a blood sample taken at the hospital revealed that Spathelf had a blood-alcohol level as high as 0.404 at the time of the incident.
