4 Police Officers Shot Dead Near Washington State Air Force Base
Four police officers were shot dead in an ambush at a Washington state coffee house, a sheriff’s official said Sunday. The attack occurred east of McChord Air Force Base in Parkland, Wash. The officers were shot at local coffee shop, Forza Coffee, the News Tribune of Tacoma reported. Pierce County Sheriff’s spokesman Ed Troyer told The News Tribune in Tacoma that the officers were sitting in the coffee shop with their computers when the shooter came in Sunday morning. He says investigators believe the officers were targeted, and it was not a robbery. [I’m not sure what the concealed carry laws are in this part of the country but I’m sure these officers would have appreciated some assistance from a well armed public when the murderous thug(s) started blasting away…ed]
Afghans Detail Detention in ‘Black Jail’ at U.S. Base
An American military detention camp in Afghanistan is still holding inmates, sometimes for weeks at a time, without access to the International Committee of the Red Cross, according to human rights researchers and former detainees held at the site on the Bagram Air Base. The site, known to detainees as the black jail, consists of individual windowless concrete cells, each illuminated by a single light bulb glowing 24 hours a day. In interviews, former detainees said that their only human contact was at twice-daily interrogation sessions. For 3rd time, Woods cancels meeting with police
Tiger Woods canceled another meeting with state troopers on Sunday, the third straight time he’s done so. He posted a statement on his Web site that said the accident was his fault, but failed to address the lingering questions about the crash that sent him to a hospital. The statement was posted about an hour before state troopers were to meet with the world’s No. 1 golfer at his home inside the gates of Isleworth. A meeting was not rescheduled. SCIENTISTS at the University of East Anglia (UEA) have admitted throwing away much of the raw temperature data on which their predictions of global warming are based. It means that other academics are not able to check basic calculations said to show a long-term rise in temperature over the past 150 years. The UEA’s Climatic Research Unit (CRU) was forced to reveal the loss following requests for the data under Freedom of Information legislation. The data were gathered from weather stations around the world and then adjusted to take account of variables in the way they were collected. The revised figures were kept, but the originals — stored on paper and magnetic tape — were dumped to save space when the CRU moved to a new building. GPs ‘should offer climate change advice to patients’
The Climate and Health Council, a collaboration of worldwide health organisations including the Royal College of Nursing, the Royal College of Physicians and the Royal Society of Medicine, believes there is a direct link between climate change and better health. Their controversial plan would see GPs and nurses give out advice to their patients on how to lower their carbon footprint. The Council believes that climate change “threatens to radically undermine the health of all peoples”. It believes health professionals are ideally placed to promote change because “we have ethical responsibility…..as well as the capacity to influence people and our political representatives to take the necessary action”. Climate change: this is the worst scientific scandal of our generation
A week after my colleague James Delingpole, on his Telegraph blog, coined the term “Climategate” to describe the scandal revealed by the leaked emails from the University of East Anglia’s Climatic Research Unit, Google was showing that the word now appears across the internet more than nine million times. But in all these acres of electronic coverage, one hugely relevant point about these thousands of documents has largely been missed. The reason why even the Guardian’s George Monbiot has expressed total shock and dismay at the picture revealed by the documents is that their authors are not just any old bunch of academics. Their importance cannot be overestimated, What we are looking at here is the small group of scientists who have for years been more influential in driving the worldwide alarm over global warming than any others, not least through the role they play at the heart of the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). The Polar ice cap during the last Ice Age might not have been as extensive as previously thought, according to archaeologists looking at the remains of human settlements in the north of Sweden. People may have lived in the northern region of Tornedalen as far back as 11,000 years ago, according to Olof Östlund, speaking to the Norrländska Socialdemokraten newspaper. [Wait. Michael Gerson has lousy timing. In The Washington Post, in one of those now familiar elegies for old media, he writes:

Professor advises underwater homeowners to walk away from mortgages
Go ahead. Break the chains. Stop paying on your mortgage if you owe more than the house is worth. And most important: Don’t feel guilty about it. Don’t think you’re doing something morally wrong. That’s the incendiary core message of a new academic paper by Brent T. White, a University of Arizona law school professor, titled “Underwater and Not Walking Away: Shame, Fear and the Social Management of the Housing Crisis.” White contends that far more of the estimated 15 million U.S. homeowners who are underwater on their mortgages should stiff their lenders and take a hike. Doing so, he suggests, could save some of them hundreds of thousands of dollars that they “have no reasonable prospect of recouping” in the years ahead. Administration plans new efforts on foreclosures
The Obama administration, battling a foreclosure crisis that shows no signs of relenting, will step up pressure on mortgage companies to do more to help people remain in their homes, officials said Saturday. The administration will announce its expanded program on Monday, Treasury spokeswoman Meg Reilly said. “We are taking additional steps to enhance servicer transparency and accountability,” Reilly said. She said the goal was to increase the rate that troubled home loans were converted into new loans with lower monthly payments. Industry officials said the new effort would include increased pressure on mortgage companies to accelerate loan modifications by highlighting firms that are lagging in that area. Swiss voters approved a ban on the construction of mosque minarets, from where Muslims are called to prayer, in a result that went against the findings of pre- election polls. The turnout was about 53 percent, he said by telephone from the capital Bern. ‘Internet surfing affects sperm count’
Spending too much time surfing the web can affect the sperm-count in men, a new study suggests. A recent survey conducted by the department of andropathy of the No 1 hospital in Guangxi Zhuang, China, got disturbing results after examining sperms of 217 voluntary student donors from 19 universities and colleges in the region. The external genitals of 1,640 students were inspected, reports the China Daily. It was found that 50% of male university students in the region have a low sperm count. The study further stated that sperm count of 56.7% of the male university students was “abnormal”.
