4 Police Officers Shot Dead Near Washington State Air Force Base

Four police officers were shot dead in an ambush at a Washington state coffee house, a sheriff’s official said Sunday. The attack occurred east of McChord Air Force Base in Parkland, Wash. The officers were shot at local coffee shop, Forza Coffee, the News Tribune of Tacoma reported. Pierce County Sheriff’s spokesman Ed Troyer told The News Tribune in Tacoma that the officers were sitting in the coffee shop with their computers when the shooter came in Sunday morning. He says investigators believe the officers were targeted, and it was not a robbery. Afghans Detail Detention in ‘Black Jail’ at U.S. Base

An American military detention camp in Afghanistan is still holding inmates, sometimes for weeks at a time, without access to the International Committee of the Red Cross, according to human rights researchers and former detainees held at the site on the Bagram Air Base. The site, known to detainees as the black jail, consists of individual windowless concrete cells, each illuminated by a single light bulb glowing 24 hours a day. In interviews, former detainees said that their only human contact was at twice-daily interrogation sessions. For 3rd time, Woods cancels meeting with police

Tiger Woods canceled another meeting with state troopers on Sunday, the third straight time he’s done so. He posted a statement on his Web site that said the accident was his fault, but failed to address the lingering questions about the crash that sent him to a hospital. The statement was posted about an hour before state troopers were to meet with the world’s No. 1 golfer at his home inside the gates of Isleworth. A meeting was not rescheduled. [I’ll have to keep this situation in mind the next time the cops show up at my door wanting to talk to me. Sorry dudes, I’m sleeping. Climate change data dumped

SCIENTISTS at the University of East Anglia (UEA) have admitted throwing away much of the raw temperature data on which their predictions of global warming are based. It means that other academics are not able to check basic calculations said to show a long-term rise in temperature over the past 150 years. The UEA’s Climatic Research Unit (CRU) was forced to reveal the loss following requests for the data under Freedom of Information legislation. The data were gathered from weather stations around the world and then adjusted to take account of variables in the way they were collected. The revised figures were kept, but the originals — stored on paper and magnetic tape — were dumped to save space when the CRU moved to a new building. GPs ‘should offer climate change advice to patients’

The Climate and Health Council, a collaboration of worldwide health organisations including the Royal College of Nursing, the Royal College of Physicians and the Royal Society of Medicine, believes there is a direct link between climate change and better health. Their controversial plan would see GPs and nurses give out advice to their patients on how to lower their carbon footprint. The Council believes that climate change “threatens to radically undermine the health of all peoples”. It believes health professionals are ideally placed to promote change because “we have ethical responsibility…..as well as the capacity to influence people and our political representatives to take the necessary action”. Mapping out the strain on your NHS: 243 sick babies treated in one London hospital ward…. and just 18 mothers come from Britain

Countless red dots scattered across the world map on the wall of a NHS hospital reveal the story of the changing face of Britain. Each dot denotes the background of a mother with a baby in the neonatal ward of London’s Chelsea and Westminster hospital. The map was put up by hospital administrators to ‘celebrate the ethnic diversity’ of the sick children treated there, each at a cost of £1,400 a day. It shows dramatically how the NHS now treats patients from every corner of the globe. The 243 mothers are from 72 different nations. They include Mongolia, the remotest regions of Russia, Japan, Africa, South America, swathes of Asia, Australasia and even Papua New Guinea. Only 18 mothers said they were from Britain. Democrats’ Unity on Healthcare Collapsing

The 60 votes aren’t there any longer. With the Senate set to begin debate Monday on healthcare overhaul, the all-hands-on-deck Democratic coalition that allowed the bill to advance is fracturing already. Yet majority Democrats will need 60 votes again to finish. Some Democratic senators say they’ll jump ship from the bill without tighter restrictions on abortion coverage. Others say they’ll go unless a government plan to compete with private insurance companies gets tossed overboard. Such concessions would enrage liberals, the heart and soul of the party. There’s no clear course for Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., to steer legislation through Congress to President Barack Obama. You can’t make history unless you reach 60 votes, and don’t count on Republicans helping him. [This news should brighten up your Sunday afternoon…ed]

Climate change: this is the worst scientific scandal of our generation

A week after my colleague James Delingpole, on his Telegraph blog, coined the term “Climategate” to describe the scandal revealed by the leaked emails from the University of East Anglia’s Climatic Research Unit, Google was showing that the word now appears across the internet more than nine million times. But in all these acres of electronic coverage, one hugely relevant point about these thousands of documents has largely been missed. The reason why even the Guardian’s George Monbiot has expressed total shock and dismay at the picture revealed by the documents is that their authors are not just any old bunch of academics. Their importance cannot be overestimated, What we are looking at here is the small group of scientists who have for years been more influential in driving the worldwide alarm over global warming than any others, not least through the role they play at the heart of the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). [The lamestream media will continue to ignore this explosive story about these climate criminals hoping this inconvenient disaster will blow over just like they did with Obama’s background before he became president and the blissfully but dangerously ignorant public will continue to plod through their day with nary a worry on their minds…ed]

“Sensational” Archaeological Find

The Polar ice cap during the last Ice Age might not have been as extensive as previously thought, according to archaeologists looking at the remains of human settlements in the north of Sweden. People may have lived in the northern region of Tornedalen as far back as 11,000 years ago, according to Olof Östlund, speaking to the Norrländska Socialdemokraten newspaper. [Wait. Mr. Climate Know It All Al Gore has been bloviating ad nauseum for years now that the polar ice cap is shrinking like Obama’s approval ratings but it turns out the cap wasn’t nearly as large as we’ve been told all this time? What Story?

Michael Gerson has lousy timing. In The Washington Post, in one of those now familiar elegies for old media, he writes:

“And the whole system is based on a kind of intellectual theft. Internet aggregators (who link to news they don’t produce) and bloggers would have little to collect or comment upon without the costly enterprise of newsgathering and investigative reporting. The old-media dinosaurs remain the basis for the entire media food chain.”

That’s laughably untrue in the Warmergate story. If you rely on the lavishly remunerated “climate correspondents” of the big newspapers and networks, you’ll know nothing about the Climate Research Unit scandals – just the business-as-usual drivel about Boston being underwater by 2011. [Did Gerson just say that the old media is dedicated to “newsgathering” and “investigative reporting?” Certainly this must have been said in jest as the old media primarily relies on the left wing tripe generated by the AP and Reuters for the bulk of their content. The old media overwhelmingly favors Democrats and is consumed with a liberal agenda that the people of American continue to reject hence their rapidly declining circulation numbers…ed]

ClimateGate: What are the Alarmists So Afraid of?

The alarmists’ reaction to CEI’s Notice of Intent to Sue NASA’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS) for withholding data–now for nigh on two years–has been particularly shrill, as regards my inquiry into the clearance and other deliberations over the non-official activities for the nasty, deceptive, third-party advocacy blog RealClimate.org by one GISS spokesman Gavin Schmidt on official, taxpayer-funded time. When considering that apparently unacceptable Request for transparency as to what NASA was thinking in agreeing to spend my money that way, our Notice and the alarmists’ reaction in the current “ClimateGate” context, also consider the following relevant excerpt from “Red Hot Lies: How Global Warming Alarmists Use Threats, Fraud and Deception to Keep You Misinformed” (pp. 104-104). That nice red cover would look great under the tree this year, even if what’s inside the cover is burning the retinas of the global warming industry right about now: [This is a great example, Mr. Gerson, of the blogosphere doing the job the “investigative reporters” of the old media refuse to do…ed]

Iowa Poll: Iowa leans conservative, offering potential for GOP

More Iowans consider themselves to be conservatives than moderates or liberals, offering the state’s Republican Party a potentially large pool of converts as it struggles to win back voters, according to a new Iowa Poll. Most current and former Iowa Republicans agree on two reasons why the party has lost elections and voters. It has nominated lackluster candidates, and officeholders have neglected to make spending control a top priority, according to the poll. But Iowans who have fallen away from the GOP differ with current members in how they view the party’s tone and tactics: [Some good info in this article for the GOP to pay attention to but way too much of what is said in this poll by the so called “former Republicans” sounds like regurgitated claptrap offered up the state run media…ed]

Professor advises underwater homeowners to walk away from mortgages

Go ahead. Break the chains. Stop paying on your mortgage if you owe more than the house is worth. And most important: Don’t feel guilty about it. Don’t think you’re doing something morally wrong. That’s the incendiary core message of a new academic paper by Brent T. White, a University of Arizona law school professor, titled “Underwater and Not Walking Away: Shame, Fear and the Social Management of the Housing Crisis.” White contends that far more of the estimated 15 million U.S. homeowners who are underwater on their mortgages should stiff their lenders and take a hike. Doing so, he suggests, could save some of them hundreds of thousands of dollars that they “have no reasonable prospect of recouping” in the years ahead. Plus the penalties are nowhere near as painful or long-lasting as they might assume, he says. [Shame for not living up to one’s legal obligations seems to be sorely lacking in America these days. A generation ago this professor would have been run out of town on a rail for this kind of advice…ed]

Administration plans new efforts on foreclosures

The Obama administration, battling a foreclosure crisis that shows no signs of relenting, will step up pressure on mortgage companies to do more to help people remain in their homes, officials said Saturday. The administration will announce its expanded program on Monday, Treasury spokeswoman Meg Reilly said. “We are taking additional steps to enhance servicer transparency and accountability,” Reilly said. She said the goal was to increase the rate that troubled home loans were converted into new loans with lower monthly payments. Industry officials said the new effort would include increased pressure on mortgage companies to accelerate loan modifications by highlighting firms that are lagging in that area. [Instead of the government pissing away even more taxpayer money and “exerting pressure” on private companies perhaps these marxists running our government should think about lowering taxes and reducing or eliminating regulations on small businesses so they are able to hire Americans and pay them a decent enough salary so they can afford to pay their damn mortgage payments…ed]

Palin book-signing draws long line of eastern Washington fans

Welcome to Sarah Palin country, 220 miles and a world of politics away from Seattle. Eastern Washington fans of the former Alaska governor and darling of the Republican right started lining up at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Hastings book store here — 26 hours before Palin’s scheduled to appear at noon Sunday — just to make sure they’d get her to personally sign her tome, “Going Rogue,” selling here for $17.39, plus tax. By 9:30 Saturday night, some 250 of the faithful were camped outside the store, sitting in lawn chairs, covering themselves with blankets and sleeping bags, warming up with portable propane heaters. “She stands for what we stand for, which is greatly lacking in Seattle,” said Debi Danielson, 54, of Yakima. “Only in Seattle can you come up with a government that has the idea that they know how to do everything.” Identify yourself as being from west of the Cascades — specifically, that liberal city by Elliott Bay — and you will be told in no uncertain terms why they love Sarah here. Swiss Voters Approve Ban on Construction of Minarets

Swiss voters approved a ban on the construction of mosque minarets, from where Muslims are called to prayer, in a result that went against the findings of pre- election polls. The initiative, sponsored by the right-wing Swiss People’s Party or SVP, was backed by almost 58 percent of the voters today, said Andre Simonazzi, a spokesman for the government. The turnout was about 53 percent, he said by telephone from the capital Bern. (SNIP) “I don’t rule out that Muslim communities in Switzerland will go to court against this referendum, most probably in the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg,” he said by telephone. “Muslims in Switzerland won’t feel welcome after this referendum.” [If they don’t feel welcome after the Swiss people have spoken perhaps they can pack their crap and go back to where they came from…ed]

‘Internet surfing affects sperm count’

Spending too much time surfing the web can affect the sperm-count in men, a new study suggests. A recent survey conducted by the department of andropathy of the No 1 hospital in Guangxi Zhuang, China, got disturbing results after examining sperms of 217 voluntary student donors from 19 universities and colleges in the region. The external genitals of 1,640 students were inspected, reports the China Daily. It was found that 50% of male university students in the region have a low sperm count. The study further stated that sperm count of 56.7% of the male university students was “abnormal”.
