Sadly, I never got to do that. “I was very close to Teddy Kennedy, too, and his death recently brought it all back. What a tragedy. Had he lived, I think Bobby would have been a great president.” But Williams had a less favourable opinion of the current president. “Don’t like him at all,” he said, “I think he wants to create a socialist country. The people he associates with are very Left-wing. One is registered as a Communist. Edwin Donovan, a spokesman for the Secret Service, said the agency will take “appropriate investigative steps” in connection to the survey, which was posted on Saturday and was quickly removed when Facebook employees were alerted to its existence. Criminals are waging a nasty online campaign right now, hoping that their victims’ fears of the tax collecter will lead them to inadvertently install malicious software. The spam campaign, entering its third week now, is showing no signs of slowing down, according to Gary Warner, director of research in computer forensics with the University of Alabama at Birmingham. This one campaign accounts for about 10 percent of the spam e-mail that his group is presently tracking, he said. “This is the most prominent spam-delivered virus in the world right now,” he said. Passenger removed after going to restroom

Officials say there is no threat aboard a United Airlines aircraft that was cleared of passengers in Los Angeles after a man ran to the restroom just before takeoff. Los Angeles International Airport police say the passenger defied a flight attendant’s order to remain seated because he urgently needed to use the restroom. U.S. Commander of Afghanistan only talked to Obama once

The military general credited for capturing Saddam Hussein and killing the leader of al-Qaeda in Iraq says he has only spoken to President Obama once since taking command of Afghanistan. “I’ve talked to the president, since I’ve been here, once on a VTC ,” General Stanley McChrystal told CBS reporter David Martin in a television interview that aired Sunday. “You’ve talked to him once in 70 days?” Mr. Martin followed up. “That is correct,” the general replied. And worse, without a clear economic recovery plan aimed at creating entry-level jobs, the odds of many of these young adults — aged 16 to 24, excluding students — getting a job and moving out of their parents’ houses are long. Young workers have been among the hardest hit during the current recession — in which a total of 9.5 million jobs have been lost. A senior White House adviser says President Barack Obama has decided to travel to Copenhagen to lead the U.S. appeal for the 2016 Summer Olympic Games in Chicago. Valerie Jarrett told The Associated Press Monday morning that the president will leave Thursday and will join his wife, Michelle, and others in his administration, in making the pitch. Obama would be the first U.S. president to take on such a direct role in lobbying for an Olympics event. Only details of a stimulus grant’s passage through its first two stops after it leaves the federal government must be reported, according to guidance memos from the White House Office of Management and Budget. That means billions of dollars will be untrackable and thousands of recipients will be left unidentified through the database, officials acknowledge. Bank Pulls Back From Acorn Work

Already facing the loss of federal government funding, the community-organizing group Acorn also has run afoul of one of its big corporate partners, Bank of America Corp. In response to questions from The Wall Street Journal, a spokesman for the banking company said it has “suspended current commitments” to Acorn Housing, an affiliated group, and “will not enter into any further agreements with Acorn or any of its affiliates,” pending assessments by the bank of the organization’s operations. Acorn, officially the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now, has been under fire since the recent release of secretly recorded videos that showed Acorn employees offering advice on evading taxes, setting up brothels and smuggling illegal immigrants. THE OBAMA administration announced last week that it did not need and would not seek new legislation to govern indefinite detention of some terrorism suspects at the U.S. Naval Base in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. In so doing, the administration has chosen the politically expedient and intellectually dishonest route. (SNIP) The American Civil Liberties Union has consistently opposed any indefinite detention regime and pushed for detainees to be charged in federal or military courts or released. So we wouldn’t expect them to join us in criticizing Mr. Obama for failing to seek a new legal regime. But it is odd that the same policy which, when pursued by the Bush administration, constituted “thumbing its nose at the Constitution” and putting a “stain on America’s name at home and abroad” now elicits nothing but a few measured tsk-tsks. Pulitzer Prize-winning conservative columnist, language expert and former White House speechwriter William Safire died Sunday, his assistant said. He was 79. Safire had been diagnosed with cancer and died a hospice in Maryland, said his assistant, Rosemary Shields. She declined to specify the type of cancer Safire had or say when he had been diagnosed. Pope Benedict XVI said Sunday that all of Europe — and not only this ex-communist country — must acknowledge its Christian heritage as it copes with rising immigration from other cultures and religions. President Obama is said to be reviewing the situation in Afghanistan to help him settle on a US strategy there. Better late than never, we guess. Still, after two years of campaigning and eight months more in office — indeed, after already having sent 21,000 more troops there — the fact that the president still lacks a plan is beyond stunning. Commander-in-chief isn’t exactly a post for someone who needs this much on-the-job training. Just six months ago, in March (though well after he ordered the extra troops), Obama rolled out what was billed as his “comprehensive, new strategy” for Afghanistan. Obama’s Policies Would Redistribute Nearly $1 Trillion in Wealth Every Year

By 2012, nearly $1 trillion from the top 30 percent of American families will be redistributed among the bottom 70 percent if Obama’s proposals on taxes, health care, and climate change become law, according to the Tax Foundation. “Even if none of Obama’s policies becomes law, the extent of income redistribution is remarkable,” Scott Hodge, president of the nonpartisan, nonprofit organization, said. “The top-earning 40 percent of families will transfer $826 billion to the bottom 60 percent in 2012.” Under the Obama plan, 70 percent of American families as a group — those earning less than $109,460 — will receive more in benefits than they pay in taxes, Hodge said. “The majority of people below the 70 percent mark will get more back than they pay in taxes,” Hodge told CNSNews.com. U.S. rethinks plans to give Libya $2.5 million in aid

The U.S. State Department said it is rethinking a decision to give $2.5 million in aid to Libya, including to foundations run by the Libyan leader’s sons, after lawmakers on Thursday asked it to cancel the plan. In a letter to U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, two U.S. lawmakers said they were unwilling to give the aid because of the warm reception Tripoli recently gave a Libyan official convicted of involvement in the 1988 Lockerbie bombing. They also accused Libyan leader Col. Muammar Gaddafi of showing “flagrant disrespect” for the 270 victims of the bombing during his visit to New York this week to attend the U.N. General Assembly.
