California Joblessness Reaches 70-Year High

California’s unemployment rate in August hit its highest point in nearly 70 years, starkly underscoring how the nation’s incipient economic recovery continues to elude millions of Americans looking for work. While job losses continue to fall, the state’s new unemployment rate — 12.2 percent, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics — is far above the national average of 9.7 percent and places California, the nation’s most-populous state, fourth behind Michigan, Nevada and Rhode Island. Statistics kept by the state show California’s unemployment rate was 14.7 percent in 1940, said Kevin Callori, a spokesman for the California Employment Development Department. Employment falls in 42 states, D.C.

Forty-two states and the District of Columbia lost jobs last month, confirming that the nation’s labor market continues to deteriorate even as more “green shoots” are sighted in other areas of the economy. Fourteen states and the District suffered double-digit jobless rates in August as the unemployment rate increased in 27 states and the nation’s capital, the Labor Department reported Friday. As a result, states whose budgets have been battered by soaring unemployment, rising social spending and collapsing tax revenues took another big hit in August even as the nation appeared to be climbing out of recession. House votes to defund ACORN

The House voted Thursday to deny all federal funds for ACORN in a GOP-led strike against the scandal-tainted community organizing group that comes just three days after the Senate took similar action. “ACORN has violated serious federal laws, and today the House voted to ensure that taxpayer dollars would no longer be used to fund this corrupt organization,” said second-ranking House Republican Eric Cantor of Virginia. The vote, on a provision attached to a student aid bill, was 345-75, with Democrats supplying all the “no” votes. Arpaio subpoenas ACORN, says funds misused

Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio alleged Thursday that a national community activist organization is using federal and state funds to fight his efforts to enforce immigration law. Arpaio sent subpoenas to the local chapter and national headquarters of the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now, or ACORN, asking for a wide array of records he says will connect the organization to a racial profiling lawsuit he is challenging in federal court. Murderer Phillip A. Paul on loose in Eastern Washington state

A man who committed murder is on the loose in Eastern Washington state after he escaped from facility staff during a trip to the Spokane County Interstate Fair. Phillip A. Paul had been under the care of an Eastern Washington hospital at the time of his escape, and it apparently took the staff two hours before they called authorities about the murderer on the loose. It happened at about 1:00 P.M. on Thursday afternoon, when Phillip Paul apparently just walked away from hospital staff. A group of hospital patients were attending the fair on an annual field trip when he escaped, raising far too many questions about why criminals such as this one were allowed to go to the fair while under hospital care. 12% Say Most Opponents of Obama Health Care Plan Are Racist

Twelve percent (12%) of voters nationwide believe that most opponents of President Obama’s health care reform plan are racist. The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that 67% of voters disagree, and 21% are not sure. In recent days, several Democrats have suggested that racism is a factor. The most prominent to make that accusation is former President Jimmy Carter. Eighty-eight percent (88%) of Republicans reject the notion that most of the opponents are racist. So do 78% of voters not affiliated with either major party. However, just 39% of Democrats share that view. Twenty-two percent (22%) of those in the president’s party say that most of the opposition to his plan comes from racists, and another 39% are not sure. Majority to Obama: Get serious on tort reform

Although most of his health care speech consisted of the same talking points he has been offering for months, President Obama last week offered up one surprise as he sought to make his increasingly unpopular health reform bill more palatable for the American public. “I don’t believe malpractice reform is a silver bullet, but I have talked to enough doctors to know that defensive medicine may be contributing to unnecessary costs,” Obama said. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said yesterday she is clueless about an amendment to prohibit government funds for embattled ACORN, although it overwhelmingly passed the Senate Monday and the White House is calling for the group to be held accountable. “I don’t even know what they passed,” Pelosi told The Post yesterday. “What did they do? 45% Of Doctors Would Consider Quitting If Congress Passes Health Care Overhaul

Two of every three practicing physicians oppose the medical overhaul plan under consideration in Washington, and hundreds of thousands would think about shutting down their practices or retiring early if it were adopted, a new IBD/TIPP Poll has found. The poll contradicts the claims of not only the White House, but also doctors’ own lobby — the powerful American Medical Association — both of which suggest the medical profession is behind the proposed overhaul. It also calls into question whether an overhaul is even doable; 72% of the doctors polled disagree with the administration’s claim that the government can cover 47 million more people with better-quality care at lower cost. The media should investigate the racial views of conservative activists like the ones who descended on Washington last weekend, one liberal congresswoman said Wednesday. Rep. Jon Stewart slams media for missing ACORN story: ‘Where the hell were you!?’

Last night, Jon Stewart featured video clips of ACORN employees advising undercover journalists posing as a pimp and a prostitute how to hide the nature of their business in their tax forms. The video clips debuted on biggovernment.com and were featured by FOX News commentator Glenn Beck. Since then the clips have circulated widely on conservative blogs and news sites and sparked a vote in the Senate to de-fund the organization. “The bad news is that ACORN appears to be a criminal organization that aids and abets criminals and get millions of dollars in taxpayer money!” Stewart said, after highlighting the clips on his show. Iraqi ‘shoe-thrower’ shot dead by US forces

An Iraqi man who witnesses said shouted abuse before throwing a shoe at a US army vehicle was shot dead on Wednesday in what the American military said was a suspected grenade attack. Residents told an AFP reporter in Fallujah that Ahmed Latif, 32, whom they said was mentally disturbed, insulted the soldiers as they patrolled in the centre of the city, and then hurled a shoe at them. The US military told AFP that a convoy in Fallujah had been attacked with a suspected grenade. [Hard to tell what’s a shoe and what’s a grenade in that environment. Job-killing policies could doom Democrat hopes

“The level of unemployment is unacceptably high. And will, by all forecasts, remain unacceptably high for a number of years.” Who do you suppose said that? A Republican political operative? A Fox News political analyst? One of those Tea Partiers who assembled in many thousands in Washington on Sept. 12? No, it was Lawrence Summers, the director of President Obama’s National Economic Council and, by common consent, one of the world’s leading economists. Summers made this gloomy forecast in the course of arguing that our economy is headed to “sustained recovery.” And though it sounds like self-protective political rhetoric, it is also in line with the thinking of Democratic economists who bemoaned a “jobless recovery” during the first Bush term. Opposition to Health Care Reform Reaches New High at 55%

One week after President Obama’s speech to Congress, opposition to his health care reform plan has reached a new high of 55%. The latest Rasmussen Reports daily tracking poll shows that just 42% now support the plan, matching the low first reached in August. A week ago, 44% supported the proposal and 53% were opposed. Following the speech last Wednesday night intended to relaunch the health care initiative, support for the president’s effort bounced as high as 51% (see day-by-day numbers). But the new numbers suggest that support for health care reform is now about the same as it was in August. [Support for this Obamacare crap continues to nosedive among the American people…ed]
