Pinkerton observed: “Judith Klnghoffer, writing for the History News Network, made the point that Obama actually ranks seventh of the last nine presidents in Gallup poll opinion ratings. So seventh out of nine isn’t so good.”

The computer teacher who allegedly threatened to blow a Bronx school sky high says he was just making a “political” statement when he barricaded himself in his classroom, sparking a standoff with police. “A teacher did not snap. A teacher did not threaten to blow up the school,” Francisco Garabitos, 55, who had been barred from MS 328 in Marble Hill after allegedly choking a student, said in an interview with The Post.

The “swine flu” that has infected more than 1,000 people in Mexico has led a lawmaker on the House Homeland Security Committee to call on U.S. officials to close the southern border. Rep. Eric Massa (D-N.Y.) said the border should be closed until the threat is resolved. “The public needs to be aware of the serious threat of swine flu, and we need to close our borders to Mexico immediately and completely until this is resolved,” Massa said in a statement. “I am making this announcement because I see this as a serious threat to the health of the American public and I do not believe this issue is receiving the attention it needs to have in the news,” Massa said.

The dramatic confrontation was sparked when six men in a small skiff sped up to the MSC Melody late on Saturday, firing their AK-47s and trying to fix a ladder to the side of the ship. Several Confederate flags placed on the graves of Civil War soldiers got pulled up by a black Auburn city councilman, who called them symbols of racism and hatred. Mary Norman, president of Auburn Heritage Association, said she was at her family’s burial plot in Pine Hill Cemetery when Councilman Arthur Dowdell removed the small Confederate flag from her great-grandfather’s grave Thursday afternoon. “He pulled up the flag, snapped it in two and put it in his car,” said Norman, who is white. Dowdell said Friday he did not break the flag’s stick intentionally. Instead, it broke when he pulled it out of the ground. But, he said, “I should have broken them all. They are offensive to me. They represent racism and the Ku Klux Klan.”

The World Health Organization said tests showed the virus from 12 of the Mexican patients was the same genetically as a new strain of swine flu, designated H1N1, seen in eight people in California and Texas. “Our concern has grown as of yesterday,” Dr. Richard Besser, acting director of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention told reporters in a telephone briefing.

A small, single-engine plane strayed into restricted air space near the U.S. Capitol on Friday, forcing anxious officials to place the White House in temporary lockdown and take steps to evacuate the U.S. Capitol. The episode was over within minutes as two F-16 fighter jets and two Coast Guard helicopters were dispatched to intercept the plane and escort it to an airport in Maryland, according to the Federal Aviation Administration. U.S. Northern Command spokesman Michael Kucharek said the two helicopters established communications with the pilot. The plane landed at Indian Head Airport in Charles County, Md., where airport owner Gil Bauserman said the aircraft had been flying from Maine to North Carolina. Bauserman said the military notified the airport that the plane would be making an unscheduled landing at 12:45 p.m. EDT. The plane landed 15 minutes later, escorted by the F-16s and the helicopters. “It was just a navigation mistake, the GPS went and the pilot got confused,” Bauserman said in an interview with The Associated Press. “This has happened many times. The restricted zone in D.C., all it does is catch poor innocent people. They’ve never caught a terrorist, it’s just people making a mistake,” he said.

Fed up with the budget crises and partisan battles that have paralyzed California for years, some influential voices believe it’s time to tear open the state constitution and start anew. Once dismissed as a hokey gimmick, support for a proposed constitutional convention has been building in the nation’s most populous state.

The Alabama House has approved a resolution that praises Miss USA contestant Carrie Prejean for speaking out against gay marriage. The House approved the resolution Thursday by Republican Rep. Jay Love of Montgomery on a voice vote.

Iowa Attorney General threatens state workers over gay marriage licenses. “Process them or face charges!” This is IOWA folks not San Fransisco!

Iowa Attorney General Tom Miller is warning the county recorders’ offices in his state that workers must process “marriage” licenses for same-sex duos or face possible charges in a court of law. “If necessary, we will explore legal actions to enforce and implement the court’s ruling, working with the Iowa Dept. of Public Health and county attorneys,” he warned on his website. But an announcement today from a statewide pro-family organization and a public interest law firm with a reach that goes around the world means the issue of same-sex weddings eventually could end up back in court. The statements from Miller relate to the state Supreme Court’s decision that Iowa must provide same-sex couples access to the state’s marriage processes.

Misdemeanors such as assaults, thefts and burglaries will no longer be prosecuted in Contra Costa County because of budget cuts, the county’s top prosecutor said Tuesday. District Attorney Robert Kochly also said that beginning May 4, his office will no longer prosecute felony drug cases involving smaller amounts of narcotics. That means anyone caught with less than a gram of methamphetamine or cocaine, less than 0.5 grams of heroin and fewer than five pills of ecstasy, OxyContin or Vicodin won’t be charged.

California school segregated students hoping to improve test scores.

Some parents in a Sacramento suburb are upset after school officials segregated students by race in a move designed to boost test scores. Students at Laguna Creek High School in Elk Grove were divided by race this week for what the school called “heritage assemblies.” The gatherings were designed to motivate students to do better on standardized achievement tests.

New York teacher arrested after he barricaded himself inside school threatened to blow the place up.

A middle school teacher who barricaded himself in a Bronx classroom this morning and threatened to blow up the building as revenge for being disciplined by the principal was arrested following a three-hour standoff, police said. No bomb was found, but police evacuated the New Millennium Business Academy Middle School/MS 328 at 1000 Teller Avenue in Morrisainia as a precaution as the 55-year-old computer teacher – identified as Francisco Garabitos – barricaded himself in his classroom.

The mother of a teenager facing trial in the United States for piracy off Somalia wants President Barack Obama to pardon her son because he was misled into joining a sea gang. Abduwali Abdukhadir Muse was captured by U.S. forces when they rescued an American sea captain being held hostage by pirates. Three of Muse’s comrades were killed in the operation. State police say a trooper has been charged with stealing truckloads of mulch from a central New York business. They say 28-year-old David Volz of Oriskany was arrested Thursday morning after investigators found that he used a borrowed dump truck to take mulch from Mohawk Valley Mulch Inc. in Rome without paying for it.

Why has the FAA kept information about aircraft bird strikes from the public?

The federal government is reversing itself and plans to release data on the thousands of incidents in which aircraft hit birds, the Department of Transportation said Wednesday. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood said the decision was reached Tuesday in a meeting with Federal Aviation Administration officials. It came after a 30-day public comment period yielded opposition to a proposal to keep the incidents out of the public eye.

Boy, 12, charged with murder of 10 month old baby.

A 12-year-old suspended from school for fighting killed a 10-month-old baby by throwing him to the floor at a home where several young children were unsupervised, officials said yesterday. The preteen boy, whom authorities won’t name because of his age, was charged as a juvenile with capital murder. A judge yesterday ordered him held in juvenile detention.

Apple pulls down application for its iPhone which allowed user to shake baby to death to stop its crying. What idiot thought of this stupid “game” and who the hell would have bought it?

Apple has apparently rethought its decision to allow an iPhone application that allows you to shake a baby to death to quiet its crying. “Baby Shaker,” a simple app from Sikalosoft, was first released Monday for 99 cents. It shows pictures of babies with the sound of them crying and a stop watch. To stop the crying, you shake the iPhone hard and then little Xs appear on the eyes of the baby, who will presumably never cry again.

A Philadelphia court officer who was described as an “exceptional man” by one judge was recently suspended for 10 days after he asked a juror to become his Facebook friend, according to a court official. Nicholas Stampone Jr., 50, who worked as a court officer at the Criminal Justice Center, was suspended for “inappropriate contact with a juror” after he went online and asked a woman who was sitting on a jury in the courtroom where he worked to be his Facebook friend, said David C. Lawrence, First Judicial District court administrator.
