John Holdren told The Associated Press in his first interview since being confirmed last month that the idea of geoengineering the climate is being discussed. One such extreme option includes shooting pollution particles into the upper atmosphere to reflect the sun’s rays. Holdren said such an experimental measure would only be used as a last resort. “It’s got to be looked at,” he said. “We don’t have the luxury of taking any approach off the table.”

A distraught woman jumped 60 feet to her death at the crowded Queens Center Mall Wednesday, landing on a teenager relaxing in a massage chair. Mary Lovelace, 55, of Jamaica, Queens, took off her shoes and put her purse on a bench before climbing over a waist-high barrier at around 3 p.m. and plunging to the ground as scores of stunned shoppers watched.

Business, not bombs, is booming at Baghdad car dealerships, as well-heeled Iraqis are indulging in a passion long out of reach—spiffy, new cars. BMWs, Nissans, Hyundais and even military-style Hummers are now weaving around the shabby, smoke-belching wrecks and donkey carts that have clogged the streets over two decades of sanctions and war. That may make Baghdad one of the few cities worldwide where the auto industry is doing relatively well—at least compared to the worst of the war, when sales were stagnant. With its limited banking system, Iraq has largely avoided the global financial meltdown. And unlike elsewhere in the world, gas prices—about $1.52 a gallon—aren’t much of a deterrent to those Iraqis eager and able to catch up with the good life behind the wheel of a new car.

Why won’t the Treasury Department tell the taxpayers which banks are trying to return TARP money they didn’t want in the first place? Why is the Obama administration refusing to allow these banks to return the taxpayer funds to the government? Keep in mind these TARP funds were forced on many banks and the government took company stock in exchange.

The Treasury Department won’t reveal the names of financial firms that are seeking to return the funds they received late last year and this year under the Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP)–funds the firms no longer want and would like to give back to the Treasury in return for the federal government surrendering the ownership interests it took in the firms. Despite repeated requests for the information from CNSNews.com, Treasury spokesman Andrew Williams wouldn’t say how many financial institutions want to give the money back in exchange for getting their stock back.

Gun control groups frustrated that public support for more restrictions on our Second Amendment is at it’s lowest point in almost two decades even after several recent instances of people loosing their minds and taking innocent people’s lives.

A newly released Gallup Poll shows that public support for more restrictive gun laws has fallen to its lowest level in the nearly 20 years that Gallup has tracked the issue. Additionally, the poll shows that support for an outright handgun ban is at its lowest in the nearly 5 decades that Gallup has polled that issue.

Missouri House approves amendments for lowering concealed carry age to 21, allowing concealed carry on college campuses.

The Missouri House has voted to lower the minimum age for concealed weapons permits to 21. Under current law, the minimum age is 23 years old. On a vote of 106-41 Wednesday, the House approved an amendment rolling back the existing prohibition. If approved, the law would also lift the ban on carrying concealed weapons at public colleges and universities, and would also allow the use of deadly force on private property.

A free fall in tax revenue is driving more state lawmakers to turn to broad-based tax increases in a bid to close widening budget gaps.
At least 10 states are considering some kind of major increase in sales or income taxes: Arizona, Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Jersey, Oregon, Washington and Wisconsin. California and New York lawmakers already have agreed on multibillion-dollar tax increases that went into effect earlier this year.

he housing bust has not been kind to the value of Bob Haines’ Germantown condo. Haines and his wife bought a three-bedroom, two-bathroom home in a luxury development called the Ashmore at Germantown in 2006 for $378,000. Now he thinks it’s worth about $240,000. But it’s not just the slow housing market that’s giving Haines headaches. He and other property owners at the Ashmore say Montgomery County has made their problems much worse by giving a nonprofit developer a $5.4 million loan to buy the 29 remaining units and turn them into long-term, affordable rental housing units.

White House denies Obama bowed to Saudi king. Saudis beg to differ and called what was clearly a bow of deference to the king “much appreciated.”

The White House is denying that the president bowed to King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia at a G-20 meeting in London, a scene that drew criticism on the right and praise from some Arab outlets. “It wasn’t a bow. He grasped his hand with two hands, and he’s taller than King Abdullah,” said an Obama aide, who spoke on the condition of anonymity.

The U.S. electricity grid in need of something better than the built in Windows firewall. Foreign hackers have managed to penetrate the system, install rogue programming.

Cyberspies have penetrated the U.S. electrical grid and left behind software programs that could be used to disrupt the system, according to current and former national-security officials. The spies came from China, Russia and other countries, these officials said, and were believed to be on a mission to navigate the U.S. electrical system and its controls. The intruders haven’t sought to damage the power grid or other key infrastructure, but officials warned they could try during a crisis or war. “The Chinese have attempted to map our infrastructure, such as the electrical grid,” said a senior intelligence official. “So have the Russians.”

Somali pirates hijacked a U.S.-flagged, Danish-owned container ship on Wednesday with 20 American crew on board in a major escalation in attacks off the lawless Horn of Africa nation, officials said. The 17,000 ton Maersk Alabama was seized off Mogadishu far out in the Indian Ocean, but all its crew were believed to be unharmed, Andrew Mwangura, coordinator of the Mombasa-based East African Seafarers’ Assistance Program, told Reuters.

White House officials travelled to France at the start of March to discuss a visit by Mr Obama to Omaha Beach, the site of the American Cemetery, established in 1944 just after D-Day and where 9,387 American personnel are buried. Among them is Theodore Roosevelt Jr the eldest son of the 26th US President. “It wasn’t going to happen,” said an American official in Washington. “We went through the motions to placate President Sarkozy but giving special treatment to France was not on our agenda.

Federal regulators are proposing several options for reining in the short-selling of stocks as investors and lawmakers clamor for brakes on moves they say worsened the market’s downturn. The Securities and Exchange Commission is meeting to vote on new rules restricting short-selling, in which traders try to profit from a stock’s decline by selling borrowed shares. One option being advanced for public comment involves restoring the so-called uptick rule, which requires short sellers to wait to sell shares until a stock trades at least a penny above its previous trading price.
