In the latest example of innovative policing in Britain, the Gloucestershire force is encouraging members of the public to report people wearing too much ‘bling’ during the recession.

Not to be outdone by Gloucestershire England, Suffolk County New York police ask kids to snitch on others via text messages. Rewards offered for hot tips on drug dealers, other alleged miscreants.

In an effort to ramp up its fight against drug abuse among high schoolers, the Suffolk County Police Department is offering students cash rewards to turn in drug dealers, along with a new way to deliver those tips – anonymous text messages. In April, police distributed posters to 58 high schools in Suffolk, seeking voluntary participation in advertising the rewards in the Crime Stoppers program. They say the initiative gives students a way to help keep their schools safe and free of drugs. “We know that these drugs are coming into the schools,” said Lt. Robert Donohue, the commander in charge of the Crime Stoppers program. “We want to know how. We want to know who’s doing it, inside or outside of the schools.”

Nearly a dozen drivers have found themselves in the crosshairs of a pellet-gun sniper on a busy Bay Area freeway and police want to stop it before someone gets killed. The shootings are taking place along Highway 680 between Washington Boulevard and Sheridan Road, near the Fremont-Sunol border. Officers are paying close attention to the stretch of Highway 680 in hopes of catching the person responsible. They are also paying close attention to the areas alongside the freeway.

Gov. Sarah Palin has signed a book deal with HarperCollins Publishers for what is described as her memoir. “There have been so many things written and said through mainstream media that have not been accurate, and it will be nice through an unfiltered forum to get to speak truthfully about who we are and what we stand for and what Alaska is all about,” Palin said in an interview Tuesday announcing the deal.

Baltimore SWAT cop arrested for felonious assault in road rage incident.

A Baltimore city police officer is facing felony assault charges after an alleged road rage incident over the weekend in Harford County, and another officer was arrested on the same day on unrelated charges. Officer Robert Cirello is assigned to the city’s SWAT team. He was arrested Friday and his police powers have since been suspended. The alleged incident happened while he was off-duty but it involved a gun, 11 News I-Team lead investigative reporter Jayne Miller said.

A MUSLIM catering manager in Britain refused to cook sausages and bacon because he feared he would be splashed with pork fat, he told an industrial tribunal overnight, alleging religious discrimination. Hasanali Khoja, 60, from London, said he felt he was at risk of contact with pork products even if he wore gloves and used tongs to cook. Mr Khoja, who claims he was discriminated against due to his Islamic faith, also alleges that in a meeting to resolve the situation, a human resources manager pulled faces and made racist gestures. He said he had raised his objections to handling pork at his interview for a senior catering manager job with London’s Metropolitan Police Service, but had been assured he would not have to handle food as it was a supervisory role. Mr Khoja got the job but when he started work at a police training centre in 2005, he was found to lack the required level of computer skills and later that year he accepted a more junior job at the same site.

A self-described aspiring rapper confessed to robbing a convenience store Friday night and shooting a clerk in the temple with a BB gun in a misguided effort to gain “street credibility” for his career in Gainesville hip-hop, according to police. Steven Gilmore Jr., 21, was arrested in his Gainesville Place Apartment, at 2800 S.W. 35th Place, after a tip led police to his home. Gilmore confessed to the Friday night robbery and to a robbery last week of Hungry Howie’s restaurant, police said.

“Funny Girl” Barbra Streisand won’t be laughing about this one: her assistant was busted on drug charges. Tina Fortenberry was arrested in Malibu on Wednesday after cops found cocaine, methamphetamines and a dangerous weapon inside her car, cops said Saturday. Police pulled over Fortenberry, 52, on the Pacific Coast Highway when they saw her vehicle had expired tags. When they searched her car, they allegedly found the drugs.

Japan Airlines jet engine chows metal baggage container as the plane pulled away from passenger loading gate.

A large metal baggage container was sucked into the engine of a Japan Airlines Boeing 747 on Monday as the giant jetliner prepared to depart with 245 passengers from Los Angeles International Airport, authorities said. The accident occurred about 1:30 p.m. when Flight 61 to Narita, Japan, pulled back from Gate 101 at the Tom Bradley International Terminal. Airport officials said the vacuum created by the air intake of the left outboard engine was so strong it pulled the empty container off a baggage cart that was either parked or driven too close to the aircraft.

An Indian man who fathered seven daughters has not washed for 35 years in an apparent attempt to ensure his next child is a boy, newspapers reported. Kailash “Kalau” Singh replaces bathing and brushing his teeth with a “fire bath” every evening when he stands on one leg beside a bonfire, smokes marijuana and says prayers to Lord Shiva, according to the Hindustan Times. “It’s just like using water to take a bath,” Kalau was reported as saying. “A fire bath helps kill germs and infection in the body.”
