Prosecuting American ‘War Crimes’
Secretary of State Hillary Clinton expressed “great regret” in August that the U.S. is not a signatory to the International Criminal Court (ICC). This has fueled speculation that the Obama administration may reverse another Bush policy and sign up for what could lead to the trial of Americans for war crimes in The Hague. The ICC’s chief prosecutor, though, has no intention of waiting for Washington to submit to the court’s authority. Luis Moreno Ocampo says he already has jurisdiction—at least with respect to Afghanistan. Because Kabul in 2003 ratified the Rome Statute—the ICC’s founding treaty—all soldiers on Afghan territory, even those from nontreaty countries, fall under the ICC’s oversight, Mr. Ocampo told me. And the chief prosecutor says he is already conducting a “preliminary examination” into whether NATO troops, including American soldiers, fighting the Taliban may have to be put in the dock. The issue arose when Mutalip Karaademi, a Muslim leader in the town of Langenthal, north of Berne, suggested a modest tower for the local mosque. The mayor supported what would have been only the fifth minaret in Switzerland — but it was blocked by opponents who want to halt what they see as inroads by political Islam in the world’s oldest democracy. President Obama’s brief proclamation of Thanksgiving Day on November 26 was unique among all recorded Thanksgiving proclamations by his predecessors: it is the first one that fails to directly acknowledge the existence of God. The beneficence shown by God to America is a theme that traditionally defines the Thanksgiving holiday, and this theme is strongly emphasized in the original Thanksgiving Day proclamations and consistently acknowledged even by modern presidents. Growing public backlash over Obamacare
Two-dozen Democrats from Republican-leaning districts, who voted for the House version of President Obama’s increasingly unpopular health care reform, are beginning to feel a growing public backlash. ReversetheVote.org has already raised $123,105 that will be dedicated exclusively to defeating all 24, including Rep. Gerry Connolly, D-Va., in 2010 if they don’t reject the final conference committee version of the bill. They “voted to take away your healthcare and put it in the hands of federal bureaucrats,” the Web site says. “Democrats made a choice … next fall, voters will make a choice.” They’re not the only ones. Twenty-nine other House Democrats who voted for the bill come from districts that John McCain carried, making them particularly vulnerable to an angry electorate that never bought into the “hope and change” hype in the first place. ACORN loses funding from many Bay Area backers
The troubles of the nation’s largest community organizing organization, ACORN, are being felt in the liberal Bay Area, where there is normally no shortage of supporters of the group’s efforts to provide free tax help and other services to low-income residents and people of color. Amid allegations that employees of the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now participated in voter registration fraud and, most recently, gave business advice to undercover filmmakers posing as a pimp and prostitute, Bay Area agencies that had supported the group have cut off tens of thousands of dollars of funding. Dubai’s Move on Debt Rattles Markets Worldwide
Global financial markets swooned Thursday, with London seeing its most precipitous drop in nearly nine months, a day after Dubai stunned investors with the news that it was asking banks to allow its main investment vehicle, Dubai World, to suspend its debt repayments for six months. The announcement — the global high finance equivalent of a homeowner asking the bank to allow six months of skipped mortgage payments, presumably because the homeowner was out of cash — sowed fear of a contagion of instability that could roil markets that are only now recovering from the near cataclysm of the last year. That possibility sent markets in London, Frankfurt and Paris spiraling downward, even as analysts struggled to explain which fears of contagion were legitimate and which were overwrought. Tiger Woods taken to hospital in ‘serious’ condition after car accident
Professional golfer Tiger Woods was seriously injured in a car accident early this morning, the Florida Highway Patrol just reported. Woods, 33, pulled out of his driveway in the Isleworth community about 2:25 a.m. when he struck a fire hydrant, and then drove into a tree at his neighbor’s property, FHP reported. Woods was transported to Health Central Hospital in Ocoee in serious condition, FHP said. No other information about his condition has been released. Man mauled after trying to have picnic with bear in Swiss zoo
A man was just moments away from death as he hung in the jaws of a bear he tried to have a picnic with in a Swiss zoo. But in the end it was the bear who ended up fighting for his life after police shot it in order to save the life of the uninvited intruder into his enclosure. These dramatic photographs were taken by a visitor to the Bern Park, Switzerland, on Sunday when Finn, a European brown bear aged four, suddenly realised the unwanted human guest in his home. The 25-year-old man’s bid to party with Finn mirrors a similar escapade in Berlin Zoo in Germany on Good Friday this year when Mandy Knobloch, 32, jumped in to swim with the polar bears. [Here was a perfect opportunity for this idiot’s gene pool to get a few gallons of chlorine dumped into it and the cops shoot the innocent bear. Kinda pisses me off…ed]
Stockholm Pride asks: ‘how hetero’ is your Facebook?
Facebook users can now check to see “how hetero” the pictures they have posted on the popular social networking site are, thanks to a new web application launched by the organizers of an annual celebration of gay culture in Stockholm. “No one has done anything like this before,” said Stockholm Pride spokesperson Jessica W. Sandberg in a statement. “To discuss how we see images in relation to the hetero norm is one way to elevate the debate about the unwritten rules regarding sexuality and gender.” The Facebook application is the third installment of Stockholm Pride’s “How Hetero” campaign, which began last summer with a similar application reviewing the accounts of Twitter users to show how strongly language is connected to the norms about sexuality.
