Pelosi's Hypocrisy: Remember When She Whined About Democrats Not Having Enough Time To Read Legislation?

pelosi_yuck - Copy

Nancy Pelosi, as House Minority Leader, was mad as hell that Republicans were supposedly ramming through legislation without giving the Democrats sufficient time to read through it before casting their votes. In fact she called what the GOP majority was allegedly doing to the Democrats “an absolute outrage!”

She complained that huge bills, many thousands of pages, were brought out of the rules committee at night and slammed on House members in the morning without allowing them the traditional “three day” window to digest the legislation. In addition some of her other major concerns revolved around sneaky language (you mean like this Pelosi?) being slipped into bills without the opportunity for her fellow Democrats to “catch it” and “protect” the American people from the evil GOP’s dastardly ways.

She continues on that the American people demand their representatives KNOW WHAT THEY ARE VOTING ON and the only way to accomplish that is to allow enough time for the complete reading of all legislation before it is brought to the floor for a vote. She bellowed, “is that asking too much?”

So how did things work out once Nancy Pelosi became Speaker of the House?

Well she didn’t make it through her first day without changing the rules to benefit the Democrats and squash any chance at a “bipartisan” House.–Pelosi Overturns Century-Old House Rules

In a naked power grab for Democrats, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has angered Republicans by pushing through a rule change to curb the GOP’s rights to affect legislation.

The rule change — approved on Tuesday, the first day of the 111th Congress — puts new restrictions on motions to “recommit” a bill to the committee that approved it in order to add new amendments.

Previously Republicans have used the rule to delay or kill legislation or to force Democrats to take politically difficult votes on such issues as gun control and illegal immigration, according to The Hill newspaper.

The new rule allows the full House to reconsider a bill without delay.

The move, which Pelosi engineered, “silences the voices of tens of millions of Americans by further shutting down open debate on the House floor and taking away the minority’s right to offer substantive policy alternatives on behalf of the millions of Americans they represent,” Minority Leader John Boehner of Ohio complained.

And Rep. David Drier of California, ranking Republican on the House Rules Committee, said the rule change would create “the most closed Congress in history.”

Before the vote on the bill, GOP leaders sent a letter to Pelosi stating: “This is not the kind of openness and transparency that President-elect Obama promised”…..

Pelosi evidently didn’t have any problem ramming through the job killing cap and trade bill with a sneaky last minute 300+ page amendment added at three o’clock in the morning, just before she scheduled a floor debate for few hours later. Hardly enough time for anyone to read the thing. Would this be one of those “outrages” she spoke about when she accused the Republicans of pulling this type of crap?–When House Democratic leaders were rounding up votes Friday for the massive climate-change bill, they paid special attention to their colleagues from Ohio who remained stubbornly undecided.

They finally secured the vote of one Ohioan, veteran Democratic Rep. Marcy Kaptur of Toledo, the old-fashioned way. They gave her what she wanted – a new federal power authority, similar to Washington state’s Bonneville Power Administration, stocked with up to $3.5 billion in taxpayer money available for lending to renewable energy and economic development projects in Ohio and other Midwestern states.

House Energy and Commerce Chairman Henry A. Waxman, California Democrat, included the Kaptur project in a 310-page amendment to the legislation unveiled at 3 a.m. Friday, just hours before the bill was to be debated on the House floor. The amendment was packed with other vote-getting provisions, both large and small, that had been sought by dozens of wavering Democrats….

She also flat out lied about allowing an opportunity for everyone, including the very people who will be most impacted by this government takeover of our healthcare system, to read the nearly 2,000 page piece of Constitutionally conflicted legislation, written exclusively by Democrats, before it was to be hastily voted on by the House members.

Pelosi Breaks Pledge to Put Final Health Care Bill Online for 72 Hours Before Vote

Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s office tells THE WEEKLY STANDARD that the speaker will not allow the final language of the health care to be posted online for 72 hours before bringing the bill to a vote on the House floor, despite her September 24 statement that she was “absolutely” committed to doing so.

House members are still negotiating important issues in the bill–whether it will provide taxpayer-funding for abortions, for example. Pelosi is pushing for a Saturday House vote, and a number of big changes will be introduced, likely less than 24 hours before the vote takes place (if in fact it does). The Rules Committee hasn’t yet released its resolution, or rule, that must be passed before the bill can move from committee to the floor. The rule will set the terms of debate and determine what amendments are in order.

It seems likely that the rule will allow very few, if any, up-or-down votes on amendments on the House floor. Rather, the rule will include a series of amendments that will all be adopted at once if the rule passes…..

Oh, and speaking of sneaking unrelated language into legislation Ms. Pelosi:
