CIA Gunning For Us, Cry The Whiny Democrats

The Democrat plan was simple enough.

Demonize the Bush administration over this CIA terrorist interrogation fiasco and keep it on the front pages with the assistance of the willing accomplices in the media for as long as possible. Then, just before the 2010 elections, bring the whole sordid affair back to life so as to damage the Republicans and hopefully increase the number of Democrats in Congress and even state governor mansions.

Unfortunately for the Democrats things don’t always go as planned and the politically vicious but mentally vacuous Nancy Pelosi managed to find herself standing in front of television cameras and pencil jockeys proclaiming she basically had no idea what was going on when it came to these interrogations.

Well that turned out to be a completely false statement Pelosi barely managed to spit out in that clip and the CIA produced documentation to prove it. Heck even one of her top aides, Michael Sheehy, was present during at least one of the very detailed briefings where it was clearly spelled out which techniques the CIA was employing and there can be little doubt Sheehy passed the information on to Pelosi.

A top aide to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi attended a CIA briefing in early 2003 in which it was made clear that waterboarding and other harsh techniques were being used in the interrogation of an alleged al-Qaeda operative, according to documents the CIA released to Congress on Thursday.

Pelosi has insisted that she was not directly briefed by Bush administration officials that the practice was being actively employed. But Michael Sheehy, a top Pelosi aide, was present for a classified briefing that included Rep. Jane Harman (D-Calif.), then the ranking minority member of the House intelligence committee, at which agency officials discussed the use of waterboarding on terrorism suspect Abu Zubaida.

A Democratic source acknowledged yesterday that it is almost certain that Pelosi would have learned about the use of waterboarding from Sheehy.

Now that the CIA has shown some prominent Democrats were well aware of what was going on the politicians are crying foul accusing the agency of “coming after them” in order to draw attention away from themselves over the “harsh” enhanced interrogation techniques that have been described by some as torture.

Democrats charged Tuesday that the CIA has released documents about congressional briefings on harsh interrogation techniques in order to deflect attention and blame away from itself.

“I think there is so much embarrassment in some quarters [of the CIA] that people are going to try to shift some of the responsibility to others — that’s what I think,” said Sen. Carl Levin (D-Mich.), who sat on the Senate Intelligence Committee and was briefed on interrogation techniques five times between 2006 and 2007.

Illinois Sen. Dick Durbin, the No. 2 Democrat in the Senate, said he finds it “interesting” that a document detailing congressional briefings was released just as “some of the groups that have been responsible for these interrogation techniques were taking the most criticism.”

Asked whether the CIA was seeking political cover by releasing the documents, Intelligence Committee Chairwoman Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) said: “Sure it is.”

The CIA has long been on the receiving end of harsh rebukes from Congress — on intelligence failures leading up to the war in Iraq, on secret prisons abroad and on the harsh interrogation techniques used on terrorism suspects. But with the release of records showing that it briefed members of Congress along the way, the CIA has effectively put lawmakers on the defensive.

Intelligence officials insist it wasn’t intentional and have not taken responsibility for publicly releasing the documents.
